Sancheong-gun

Sancheong-gun

Located on the northwest of Gyeongnam, Sancheong-gun is adjacent to Hapcheon-gun and Euiryeong-gun on the east, Hamyang-gun and Hadong-gun on the west, Jinju-si on the south and Geochang-gun on the north. Sancheong stretches 38.8 km from east to west and 40.3km from north to south, being surrounded by the high mountains. Cheonwangbong Peak of the Jirisan Mountain Ridge makes the western border with Hadong-gun and Hamyang-gun while Mt. Hwangmaesan, the branch of Mt. Baekunsan, makes the border with Hapcheon-gun. Gyeonghogang River flows through Hamyang from north to south and meets Yangcheongang River from Mt. Hwangmaesan in Danseong-myeon. The river again meets Deokcheongang River flowing from Mt. Jirisan and makes Namgang River.

Sancheong is very convenient in transportation with Daejeon-Tongyeong Expressway, National Road No.3 from Namhae to Chosan, National Road No.20 from Sicheon to Gyeongju, and 6 other Local Roads connected one another.

Mountains cover 79% of Sancheong. Therefore, Sancheong grows barley, bean, millet and vegetables as well as rice. It has also grown leaf tobacco, silkworm and ginseng but its harvest has been reduced. Now apples, pears and persimons are taking their places as local specialties.

Sancheong, together with Hadong, is known for porcelain clay. Half of national porcelain clay production is from Sancheong. With this, Sancheong developed ceramic industries and Sangcho Earthenware is admitted to have the best quality in Korea.

Sancheong has abundant tourist attractions including temples like Daewonsa, Naewonsa, Beopgyesa, Yulgoksa, cultural heritages like Dansoksa temple site, Great monk Seongcheol's Birthplace, Munikjeom Cotton Cultivation Site, Nammyeong Josik's Remains, Deokyangjeon, King Guhyeong's Tomb, and mountains like Jirisan, Ungseokbong, Hwangmaesan, Duncheolsan, Daeseongsan, Wangsan, Pilbongsan, along with valleys in Daewonsa, Naewonsa, Jungsanri and Georim.
