Surrounded by the sea at the southern end of Goseong peninsular, Tongyeong-si consists of 41 inhabited islands and 110 uninhabited islands, making the representative island area in Gyeongnam. Tongyeong port, being the east gate to Hallyeo Maritime National Park, is known as the most beautiful port in Korea. Tongyeong, adjacent to the clean sea zone, is the Fishery Industry Base with its convenient marine transportation network.
The shallow waters of the adjacent sea along the Rias Coast has plenty kinds of fish, making Tongyeong the best place for the cultured fishery industry. The anchovy is one of Tongyeong's local specialties. It is also known for oyster aquaculture, arkshell culture, eel fishing, and trap fishery.
There has been little discrimination between high class people and low class people in Tonyeong. Therefore it developed many handicrafts workshops and craftsmen to provide their works for Tongje-yeong. Tongyeong-gat(hat), Tongyeong-jangnong(closet), Tongyeong-soban (small table) had nationwide fame and the famous Najeon-chigi(lacquer ware) originated here in Tongyeong.
As for the tourism resources there are Hallyeo Maritime National Park (designated in 1968) and Mireukdo Iljudoro (Sanyang-eup), which is the scenic tour course to appreciate Hallyeo Maritime National Park and its seascape. Tongyeong became the best tourist attraction in the south sea with recently developed Donam Tourism Complex.
