Hamyang-gun

Hamyang-gun

Hamyang-gun was the border of Mahan, Jinhan and Byeonhan in the Korean history more than 1500 years ago. It is assumed that Hamyang transferred from the Gaya Culture to the Silla Culture.

Located on the northwest of Gyeongnam, Hamyang has the mountain ridges of Sobaeksanmaek on the border with the Honam Area; Mt. Deokyusan on the north, Mt. Jirisan on the south, and Mt. Baekunsan in the center. The streams of Namgyecheon, Wicheon and Eomcheon rise from Mt. Deokyusan, Mt. Baekunsan and Mt. Jirisan respectively. They meet on the southeast of Hamyang and flow to Namgang River.

Hamyang stretches 25km from east to west, and 50km north to south making the area of 724.8 ㎢, being high in the west and low in the east. Though mountains cover 79% of the land and the farming area is only 14%, the agriculture is still the main business of the region.Hamyang used to be the major city around, but now it is a little behind compared to the neighbor cities like Geochang, Namwon and Jinju. The population is about 48,000. The transportation became very convenient with the opening of 88 Olympic Expressway, Daejeon-Tongyeong Expressway, Gunsan-Hamyang Expressway and Ulsan-Hamyang Expressway. Hamyang is a popular tourist attraction as a climbing course and tourist resort with high mountains like Jirisan (National Park No.1), Deokyusan (National Park No.10), Hwangmaesan, Gibaeksan, Baekunsan, Gwaegwansan, Obongsan, Sambongsan and the valleys in Sinjindong, Hwarimdong, Baegmudong, Bujeondong and Chilseon Valley and Hansin Valley.
