Jinjuseong Fortress, built on the top of a cliff near the Nam River, is arepresentative tourist attraction of Jinju, a city which boasts many historicaland cultural assets. In particular, it was one of the top three Great Battlesduring Imjinwaeran (the Japanese invasions of Joseon in 1592-1598) whereGeneral Si-min Kim soundly defeated 20,000 Japanese invaders with only3,800 soldiers.
Chokseongnu Pavilion
As one of the three most famous pavilions in Korea, Chokseongnu formspart of a magnificent scenic view with the Nam River around JinjuseongFortress. Uiam Rock lies on the riverside below the pavilion. ChokseongnuPavilion was selected as one of the Top 50 Most Beautiful Places to Visit inKorea’ by CNN.
Jinju National Museum
Built to highlight the historic value of Jinjuseong Fortress, the Jinju NationalMuseum specializes in Imjinwaeran, or the Japanese invasion of the 16thcentury. The museum building, designed by renowned Korean architectSwoo-geun Kim, is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Koreanarchitecture.
Uiam Rock
Uiam Rock rises above the blue waves of the Nam River as proudly as therocky cliff on which Chokseongnu Pavilion stands. During Imjinwaeran (theJapanese invasion of Joseon in 1592), a patriotic female entertainer namedNongae embraced a Japanese general and threw herself into the river fromthis rock, killing them both.
