Haman Traditional Fireworks: Haman’s shower of fire flames
This local folk game of Haman is known to have been played at Mujinjeong Pavilion since the mid Joseon period, around the eighth day of the fourth lunar month (Buddha’s Birthday, also called Sawol Chopail). It is to hang the fallen fires made of charcoal powder of oak trees between the lanterns and then blow them away on the water like pollen. It is said that the event was first started by Jeong Gu, a county governor in the King Seonjo’s reign of the Joseon Dynasty to wish for the wellbeing and prosperity of the county people. The event was designated as Gyeongsangnam-do Intangible Cultural Heritage and restored in 1985 to the current form, being held every year.
